We helped a traditional newspaper brand build an AI-driven news app to fulfill today's curious readers' expectations. Readers can read the important headlines date-wise, watch live updates, listen to podcasts, or read personalized news feeds. The news is available in multiple formats and languages to target multiple regions.

We implemented AI in the news app to adjust to what readers like and help publishers boost engagement through their information and revenue through smart recommendations and built-in monetization features.

Business Problem

Our client is a well-known newspaper company that has serves newspapers for decades through its print editions and a basic digital platform. Currently, their approach was traditional. They used to publish daily stories on their website and other best news apps, but soon they noticed limited interactions due to this approach.

User engagement was also low, and readers were frequently moving to other sources or social media to get continuous breaking news and updates. As the current experience was generic and did not have a personalized touch, users were slowly dropping. The client was struggling to handle different types of content, like videos, live updates, and podcasts.

The Big Idea

To fulfill the modern needs of users, the aim was to create a news app where interested readers can read the news, stories in different content formats according to their preferences. The client’s idea was to provide extraordinary functionalities in the news app to give every breaking news and important updates at one place.

As their news business lacked personalized experience, this app uses AI that will recommend the most relevant news, offer summaries, and keep users engaged through interactive features like polls and discussions. The vision was not just to digitize the newspaper like an epaper but to modernize the whole news experience and provide better engagement, easy accessibility with good monetization options, whether they prefer text, video, or audio content.

Brief Into App

The new app provides short and easy-to-read headlines where readers can easily go through the important headlines quickly. They can also read in-depth stories, live video streams, and listen to part in podcasts through this app. Users can read the latest headlines, watch live coverage, listen to interviews, or even join discussions through in-app polls and comments. The app uses an AI engine that will personalize each user’s feed based on their reading history, location, and language preferences. It also offers premium subscriptions, ad placements, and sponsorship opportunities to help the publisher generate revenue.

The client requirement was to engage and personalize the experience; hence, we included multiple categories such as fashion, entertainment, breaking news, technology, general knowledge, health and wellness, and more to make the news easily accessible.

Our Process

As we focus on creating a smart news app, our development process focuses on understanding how people consume news today and turning those insights into a smooth, personalized digital experience.

UX Research: We studied several AI news apps and offline news apps to know how different readers consume news and understand user behaviors, preferences, and frustrations.
Technology selection: As our target was modern users, we chose modern technologies like AI and a custom CMS for real-time updates, personalization, and multi-format publishing.
Iterative Design and Development: Our design process was focused on simplicity and usability. Our designers refine layouts, navigation, and content presentation for a better reader experience.
Testing with Real Users: Before launching this news app, we conducted many tests and tested first with real readers to collect feedback and improve the app design and content accordingly.

Challenges

Real-Time Content Delivery and Breaking News: Delivering breaking news that too from a verified source instantly without delays, was challenging as it needed stable servers.
