Smart Furniture Delivery App Development for UK & USA Operations
Planning deliveries for multiple regions in the USA and UK was complicating the client's business as this needed a lot of advanced planning, like informing the logistics person, managing calls and emails manually. We built a custom furniture delivery application to keep all delivery operations in sync through the app. The app notifies users about the list of upcoming deliveries, with locations. We added GPS to track outside and within-city deliveries. Some of the great features of app are route planning, rescheduling delivery time/date, take prebook orders, real-time notifications and more.
As the requirement was a cross-platform app, we used Flutter, so it runs on multiple devices. It also has a cloud backend that synchronizes data in real time.
Business Problem
Our furniture manufacturing client manufactures stylish and durable furniture since decades. Their business operates across multiple areas in the USA and the UK. As the furniture demand grow in other cities, the client was facing missed and inefficient delivery problems as they used to take calls and emails manually.
They also had to pay extra to the logistics person for urgent deliveries, due to given commitment to customers. Also, there was no visibility or a way to track the parcel when it was left from the shop. Overall, it was creating a lot of confusion in running a business and making things hectic.
Other than this, there were several business problems like manual dispatching, no real-time tracking status, poor coordination between staff, and no proper management to handle big order deliveries. Hence, to reach a wider audience from different regions and enhance the manufacturing, logistics, and delivery operations, they approached Expert App Devs to develop a furniture delivery app.
The Big Idea
To solve the delivery issues and improve coordination within the staff, the idea was to create a furniture delivery app that automatically assigns furniture deliveries by dates based on location and order volume. In today's busy days, client often needs to schedule delivery in advance, hence we added an option in the app by which user can select their convenient time and date for pickup.
The app supports multi-role access for dispatch managers, drivers, and customers. Plus, it also allows users to pre-book orders, so the manufacturer can plan deliveries efficiently.
Brief Into the App
This furniture delivery service app allows users to browse different categories of lifestyle furniture available in an offline store from their comfort of home. It helps manufacturers to schedule deliveries by checking the orders from apps. Drivers get the optimized routes and deliver multiple orders of nearby locations in one run.
Customers can put reschedule a request through the app in case they want to receive delivery on another date. The app reduces the manual work such as managing calls and emails upto a great extent. Because the app notifies each user of the current operation status.
Our clients' manual workload has been reduced due to automation, and it has reduced 70% of missed deliveries, which used to happen due to poor coordination. Also, there was a 65% reduction in manual customer support calls and a 42% increase in customer satisfaction.
Our Process
We followed a collaborative approach, and here is our process from an app idea to launch.
- Initial Discovery: We started with understanding the client's manufacturing and delivery process to find the issues and plan the app features.
- UX/UI Design: We created wireframes for each user type to get an idea of their operations.
- Tech Stack Selection: The client has multiple audiences, hence we selected Flutter for the furniture delivery app development.
- Agile Development: To ensure we align with clients' expectations, we executed each phase in sprints and developed the MVP one by one to get feedback and refine accordingly.
- Testing and deployment: We conducted usability and functional testing to test real-world delivery scenarios. And beta testing with real drivers and dispatchers.
- Ongoing Support: We believe in long-term satisfaction, hence our team monitors the app regularly and performs updates whenever a new version is released.
Challenges
Our furniture app development has several operational and technical challenges. Here they are:
- Integrating Route Optimization with Delivery Time Windows: Matching delivery slots with optimized routes required careful algorithm design.
- Managing Real-Time Tracking Across Time Zones: With deliveries across the UK and USA, the app needs to sync data in real-time across different time zones.
- Offline Access for Drivers: Many delivery routes have low-network areas, so we built offline mode support to avoid disruptions.
- Proof of Delivery: The delivery person needs to collect proof of delivery through a digital sign, which needed an extra effort.
- Notifications: Client has a monthly thousands of deliveries, thus it needed a cloud messaging tool without failure. Because notifications need to be synced in real-time, and it can't be missed.
